Kheda, Gujarat: In a disturbing turn of events, communal tensions flared up in Kheda district, Gujarat, as stones were thrown at a Hindu religious procession passing through a Muslim-majority area in Thasra town on a Friday afternoon. The incident left several individuals injured, including three police personnel, and ignited tensions between the two communities.

The ‘Shiv Ki Sawari shobha yatra,’ a procession that takes place annually from the Lord Shiva temple on the final day of the ‘Shravan’ month, witnessed an unfortunate disruption this time. With approximately 700-800 participants, the procession came under attack as miscreants from the terrace of an adjacent mosque pelted it with stones.

Videos of the incident circulated on social media, capturing the alarming moment when the procession faced a barrage of stones. However, swift action by local law enforcement prevented the situation from escalating further.

Kheda Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Gadhia, provided details about the incident, stating, “When the yatra reached the Teen-batti area, some anti-social elements threw stones and bricks at the procession.

The swift response of the police ensured the prompt restoration of order in the area. Additional law enforcement personnel from neighboring districts have been summoned and stationed in the town to prevent any potential disturbances.

The stone-pelting incident resulted in injuries to one sub-inspector, two constables, and several others. Authorities are currently investigating whether the attack was preplanned or spontaneous.

Efforts to restore peace in the area are underway, with leaders from both communities being contacted. Authorities are reviewing video footage of the incident to identify and apprehend those involved in pelting stones.

Superintendent Gadhia made an appeal for peace and urged the public not to spread rumors that could further aggravate the situation.

Local media reports indicate that a substantial contingent of state police has been deployed in Thasra town and surrounding areas to prevent any further escalation of communal tensions.

This incident underscores the importance of maintaining harmony and unity in diverse communities and highlights the crucial role played by law enforcement agencies in preventing the escalation of such unfortunate events. Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the region.
