In a shocking and deeply concerning turn of events, relations between Canada and India have taken a significant hit following the brutal assassination of Sukha Deneke, a well-known figure associated with the Moga district gang in India. Sukha Deneke, also known as Sukhdool Singh, had been a prominent member of the Moga district gang in Punjab, India. However, he managed to evade Indian authorities and sought refuge in Canada in 2017, reportedly using forged documents to enter the country. During his time in Canada, he is believed to have become affiliated with the Khalistan terrorist group led by Arsh Dalla, further complicating his criminal associations.
The shocking murder of Sukha Deneke has been claimed by Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang, adding to the complexity of the situation. This incident unfolds against the backdrop of already strained relations between India and Canada, exacerbated by the recent assassination of another individual linked to the Khalistani movement, Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was fatally shot earlier this year in Surrey, Canada, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations. It’s important to note that India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.
The deteriorating relations took a public turn when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s murder. This accusation led to the expulsion of an Indian diplomat from Canada. In response, India vehemently denied any involvement and dismissed the allegations as “absurd and politically motivated.” This, in turn, resulted in the reciprocal expulsion of the Canadian intelligence services’ India station chief.
Concerns over the safety of citizens have prompted the Canadian government to issue an updated travel advisory, cautioning against non-essential travel to specific regions within Canada, including Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab, due to safety concerns. In response, India has raised its alert level for its citizens residing in Canada, urging them to exercise extreme caution. This decision is a direct response to what India sees as a disturbing increase in “politically-condoned” hate crimes targeting Indian nationals and diplomats in Canada.
Of particular significance is the emergence of Arsh Dalla’s name in the latest list released by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA). This list comprises individuals identified as criminals and Khalistani terrorists with ties to Canada. Notable names on this list also include Goldy Brar and Lakhbir Singh Linda, with the latter being a known Khalistani terrorist linked to the Punjab RPG incident.
These recent events underscore the complex and sensitive issues surrounding the Khalistan movement and its far-reaching impact on international relations. Authorities in both India and Canada face the challenging task of navigating and preserving diplomatic ties amidst these ongoing developments.
