India records highest-ever in new cases

Coronavirus cases in India hit a record highest with over 4lakh new cases being reported in the last 24 hours, while the active cases crossed the 32-lakh mark, according to the data released by the Union Health Ministry on Saturday.

The infection tally rose to 1,91,64,969 with 4,01,993 new cases, while the death toll increased to 2,11,853 with 3,523 daily new fatalities. while the fatality rate stands at 1.11%. according to the date stated.

It has taken just 17 days for the daily case count to rise from 1lakh on April 4 to over 3 lakhs on Wednesday. A case has surged at 6.76% daily, more than four times faster than a similar growth in daily numbers in the US. The current spike in India is already overwhelming the healthcare infrastructure in many states, even with the high positivity rate. over the past three days, the surge may be far from over yet.

Top five states which have registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 67,013 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 34,254 cases, Kerala with 26,995 cases, Delhi with 26,169 cases and Karnataka with 25,795 cases. 54.15 percent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Maharashtra alone responsible for 20.14 percent of the new cases.

India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 730,000 on August 23, 40 lakhs on September 5 and 5 million on September 16. It went past60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakhs on October 11, crossed 80 lakhs on October 29,90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

Meanwhile, some countries are bringing in stricter rules affecting travel to and from India amid fears over the rising case.

The explosion in Covid cases and deaths in India in the second wave, which has left the public healthcare system crippled has prompted many nations, including the US, to offer help.

According to the ICMR, 26,20,03,415 samples have been tested up to April 14with13,84,549 samples being tested on Wednesday.
