Supreme Court Lawyer Prashant Bhushan Raises Concerns About "One Nation, One Election"

In a significant statement, renowned Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan has voiced his apprehensions regarding the “One Nation, One Election” proposal, suggesting that the central government’s promotion of this concept may be motivated by the desire to postpone elections in five states scheduled for the end of this year. The states in question are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram.

Prashant Bhushan, a prominent legal expert, has expressed skepticism about the feasibility and viability of implementing “One Nation, One Election” in India’s parliamentary democracy. He argues that such a system could not be appropriate for a multicultural country like India since it might lead to a protracted period of one-party control even after a government loses its majority.

Bhushan raised concerns that the central government’s fervent push for “One Nation, One Election” could be a deliberate attempt to postpone elections in the aforementioned states. He asserted that the administration may be acting in this way in order to buy itself more time to obtain positive outcomes in these states.

In his statement, Bhushan stated, “Implementing ‘One Nation, One Election‘ in a parliamentary democracy like India may not be feasible, as India’s political landscape is marked by its diversity. Even after losing a majority, a government in India can still survive temporarily, and a new government can be formed. Therefore, this system might not be suitable for our country.”

They talked more about this thing called “One Nation, One Election.” Some people say it’s a good idea because it could mean fewer elections and save money. They think it could make things more stable in politics. But there are also people who say it’s not such a great idea. They worry that if we do this, one party might stay in power for a very long time, which isn’t how our democracy usually works.

One of the people who doesn’t like this idea is Prashant Bhushan. He’s a smart person who knows a lot about the law, and he’s saying that “One Nation, One Election” might not really fit with how our democracy is supposed to work.

So, the argument about this keeps going on in India. We have to wait and see what the government and other important people decide. Will they listen to experts like Prashant Bhushan, or will they make “One Nation, One Election” a real thing in India, which has lots of different political parties? It’s a big question that we’ll have to watch and see what happens.
